The salesman in the desert selling water has a distinct advantage over the multitude of used sand lot owners. With a product that is clearly in demand, we would expect water inventory to remain consistently low. Yet because of the landscape it is sometimes difficult to see the water company behind the sand dunes.

Every time a new product or service is launched these days, an internet marketing campaign is included. Then it seems like another three or four companies spring up online the next day offering practically the same thing. The abundance of choices also brings an abundance of information. People who search online for anything expect a great deal of information and a multitude of choices. Entrepreneurs, who must decide which product to get behind from a business perspective, also approach the situation like a consumer.

We’ve all made purchases online that either met, or failed to meet our expectations. For the entrepreneur who is choosing to market a particular item, they need to know everything up front before making a decision. In a highly competitive market, selection for the prospective business owner is similar to that of a consumer. Buying into a business opportunity, however, involves a much deeper relationship.

Direct marketing products with value always serve the best interest of everyone. When true, measurable value exists in the product, it benefits everyone it affects. In order for companies to compete, they must rise to the same standard.

When a direct marketing professional has an educational system for sale, chances are they’ve already reaped the benefits it delivers. As the overall knowledge of man continues to escalate at unprecedented speed, the demand for specialized knowledge grows in all markets. The ability to deliver valuable information is a rewarding experience for everyone.

Looking specifically at financial and educational material, it is reasonable to suspect that time can have an effect on the value of that information. As the knowledge base increases, some or all of that information may be subject to change. This is especially true for specialized educational products. Tax laws seem to change every year, and investment advice has to remain constant. Knowledge on how to repair a VCR may be ancient, but technical training for disk players, or TV’s for that matter, changes constantly.

If the product we purchase can’t be upgraded or enhanced, it is like any other product that begins to depreciate. Having a lifetime warranty on an electronic device would definitely affect our decision to purchase. Likewise an educational product, or financial service that absorbs changes without adding expense to the user, satisfies the demand for true and lasting value.

Finally we have to know if it works. Catchy slogans and entertaining advertisements aside, people need to hear from other people what they can expect. All the scientific evidence in the world isn’t going to convince me to buy some wonder tonic if my neighbor is telling me it gave him gas.

People trust people that aren’t trying to sell them something. The individual giving the testimony doesn’t gain a thing by convincing someone else to buy. TV has lost most of its credibility when it comes to parading ‘supposed’ consumers around with glowing, well scripted, endorsements; especially when the viewer can Google the product and read a dozen negative reviews in an instant.

Direct marketing products with value always have the endorsement of the marketing professional. Although this can seem like a car salesman claiming they own the same car, the value in the product can be measured apart for that endorsement. Even the addition of other consumers and business owners giving their reviews, only enhances the perceived value based on measurable criteria; namely, how it helps and why.

The internet market will continue to absorb any and every imaginable product people conceive. Rising to the top, the few truly valuable items will serve both the public lucky enough to find them, and the marketer clever enough to deliver them.

When a home business owner is considering which direct marketing products they want to sell several questions should come to mind:

1. How much manual labor is involved per sale?
2. What are the operating expenses for my business?
3. If my goal is X amount per month, how does that break down?

I Didn’t Work This Hard For The Man

Running a business demands work, but the home business community all agrees that we’re after a certain lifestyle. We want the time with family and friends that our job makes impossible.

Setting aside the time it takes to set everything up, what sort of time demand will my new business ask of me daily?

What Financial Return Do I Need Per…

We usually set our goals for a new business on a per month basis to follow billing cycles. This amount needs to be broken down into daily goals. By holding ourselves accountable to the activity necessary to reach daily goals, we’ll reach the monthly goal.

For instance if we need the business to generate $10,000.00 per month, we’ll need at least 2500 per week and 500 per day on a 5 day workweek.

If I know this prior to deciding which direct marketing products to sell, it’s easier to answer my other two questions.

Using an online store or website, any number of common products can be sold through the drop shipping method. This is also true for many MLM businesses.

Profits are calculated on the difference between our price and the purchase price. Shipping can either be added to the customer’s price or reduced from our profits. Either way we can calculate how many items per day we would need to sell in order to reach that $500.00 goal.

In the case where the items we sell have a wide range of prices, we might need several months to determine an average order. When we have the average we’d know how many orders per day are needed to reach our goal.

The Better Products

Any item that can be downloaded, whether we created the product or not, has a more profitable margin for several reasons:
a) No inventory costs, storage costs, manufacturing costs etc…
b) No importing, exporting or shipping costs are necessary.
c) Cost per item is usually low enough to attract more buyers.

Owners of intellectual products make it a point to tell prospective marketing affiliates the profit margin on their material.

Business for e-books is booming because most marketing professionals understand how to quickly setup campaigns to move these resources. Every one of these direct marketing products represents a unique income stream; most are capable of reaching our monthly goal on their own.

The Best Products

The top tier isn’t simply reserved for items that cost a lot and produce generous income to the marketer. These are the products that perform.

Whether in the form of a physical product, a membership or an investment, these products are typically designed for increasing wealth.

People aren’t going to buy top tier products unless they have faith that these products will benefit them far beyond the purchase cost. These products stand upon a proven track record, not the endorsement of late night infomercial actors.

Finding What We’re Looking For

The law of attraction is at work for these products for two reasons:
1. The people who want them are already prepared to meet the cost.
2. Once the marketer has managed to introduce these products to the people who want them, their work is done.

Not everyone has the self confidence necessary to act upon their desire for great wealth. Most people are too timid to overcome the purchase price. The marketer can do nothing more than bringing together the people who want a product, with that product.

Many people have looked upon brand names as the gauge for quality, be it good or bad.   A popular computer brand would likely sell more than the less popular counterparts.  But with more and more consumers becoming educated and well-versed on what quality really means, these people are now out to get more value for their money or what they feel they truly deserve.

No amount of good advertising from the competitors will ever put down quality commodities.  This is especially true with companies who offer services (as these are intangible).  A customer can always return sub-standard products but this can’t be done with services.  It is imperative to begin with great service quality in the first place.  Therefore, looking at all this, brand names fade in importance when quality is the topic.
